Losing my virginity

I lost my virginity this week.

No, not that virginity. Alas, that one is still very much intact. I’m talking about my “The L Word” virginity.

Up until this week I had never seen so much as a snippet of this much vaunted show. But, I am assured, if I want to prove my same gender loving credentials and graduate as a grade A gay, I must have a working knowledge of this mythical TV drama. So, I tracked down a copy of season one, put on episode one, and settled down for some quality lesbian viewing.

My thoughts, in no particular order:

  • Acting a little wooden initially especially Jenny and Tim.
  • Marina is hot.
  • Jenny seemed initially ok but started to irritate me after about 10-15 minutes in. Not sure why, but it got worse, not better thoughout.
  • Wow, everyone is apparently insanely attractive and highly polished in LA!
  • Bette/Tina relationship issues/sperm donor storyline initially not that interesting, but got more so towards the end of the episode. The bit with the black sperm donor brought up some interesting issues and I thought was well handled.
  • I like Dana. And I liked the bit with Dana and Alice and the diagram of who slept with who.
  • I hope they develop Shane’s character more in later episodes.
  • The episode was really long! I watched it in two segments because it was a weekday and I needed sleep!
  • Too much sex! At times I felt like I was watching porn, not a TV show and it didn’t seem to develop the plot or characters or anything sometimes. OK, so most of it was pretty hot, but I thought it was overkill. There wasn’t enough character development given how long the episode was, which made it drag, and they could have cut down some of the sex and had more character development instead.
  • Related to the above: for a couple that allegedly have “issues” with their sex life, Bette and Tine sure seem to do it a lot!
  • The whole Marina/Jenny thing could have been better done. Both of them seemed pretty shallow. There wasn’t much real connection there and the stuff with liking the same books seemed like just a pretext for them to get it on rapidly. I think Marina is hot and would like to know more about her than just that she likes books and has a nice arse. Jenny didn’t do much all episode except be uncomfortable and self-absorbed and have sex, which was unfortunate given the massive amount of screen time she had.
  • The bit at the end with Shane and Bette and Tina was cute.

Verdict: It’s not the best thing I’ve ever seen, but I’ll definitely be back for more.
